September 2026
1
There is no fixed bedtime ritual,
no story that must be finished
before sleep can come.
We bathe, brush our teeth,
and follow what the body needs.
2
Sometimes a game begins
in the middle of it all.
He laughs and draws us in.
This, too, is a way of coming close.
3
When he is tired,
a feeling may rise
and become a cry.
I stay beside him
as it moves through.
4
Then he lies next to me,
talking to himself
for a few more minutes.
The words fall away.
He slips into sleep.
5
Most mornings,
he wakes light and glad.
Sometimes he tells me
what happened in a dream,
just as he tells me
what happened yesterday.
6
The line between dreaming
and waking
has not yet grown so deep.
In the morning light,
both are things he has lived.
7
He is learning the words
today, tomorrow,
now, later.
He says them as we do,
yet in the way he tells things,
the world still seems to arrive
one moment at a time.
8
Sometimes I pause,
a little dazed.
Perhaps this is how it begins:
one moment joined to another,
until they become a story.
